THE COLLEGE AND ITS AIMS 2 Leeds College of Art and Design provides a comprehensive range of further and higher education courses in art, craft and design. The origins of the college go back to when the Leeds Mechanics’ Institute merged with the Literary Institute to form the Leeds School of Art. The college is located on two sites. Others have gone into careers related to art and design in a variety of roles including art gallery manager, fabricator, illustrator, editorial assistant, graphic designer, journalist, theatre staging design, lecturer, learning support worker, artist in residence and study centre assistant. In , the Leeds Mechanics' Institute (which offered drawing classes) merged with the Literary Institute, creating Leeds School of Art. In , it moved to our present Vernon Street building, whose radical design reflected the clean lines of the Art & Craft movement.

We’re an interdisciplinary School bringing together expertise from a range of design and technology specialisms. Creation and innovation are at the heart of both our teaching and research as we aim to develop new design ideas and provide solutions to issues faced in industry and society. During his ten-year tenure in Leeds he helped to revolutionise art education in England by establishing the Basic Design Course, a programme inspired by the German Bauhaus college and the theoretical writings of Herbert Read.
